RLAM - WB Wants to do them all - Macrossworld Convention 2009 Print

The free event hosted in collaboration with the UCLA Japanese Animation Club at the UCLA Ackerman Union ended a few hours ago with new developments about the Robotech Live Action Movie after a Q&A session with Tommy Yune. According to MEMO’s notes there were three key points about the RLAM.

Release Date?

No Director

As of now there is no official release date, which will be announced only until a director is chosen. Currently the RLAM is still in Pre-Production.

Which saga will the RLAM take place in?

As we already know, WB has the rights to all of ROBOTECH and they want to do ALL of ROBOTECH using the “Harry Potter template”. This means a successive series of movies, which is good news because it is looking like we are going to get all three sagas. WB wants to take their time and do this right.

VF-84

Which VF will be used?

The F-14 has been long decommissioned by the military so its not looking good for fans of the aircraft. The way these things work is to get the backing of the armed forces ala-Transformers and countless other movies to use on the big screen thus promoting the military. Heck, Tommy mentioned that by the time actual production begins the F-22 could be decommissioned with all the advances in technology. We have to think in terms of Iron Man here. The timelines will be altered to reflect current events and technology. The same way the Taliban was used in place of the Viet Kong. Sorry retro 80s fans!

While we have the usual HG patented less-is-more answers one of the only straight answers of the Q&A session was that there is no official release date until a director is picked, perhaps this is a teaser to a bigger announcement at this years’ Comic Con International. On the other hand WB wants to do ALL of ROBOTECH which is great news for the RT aficionados, with any hope at the same time satisfying the long-starved fans and WB’s pocketbook.

Both days were good and fun.

Title: Very ambitious
I always thought they would concentrate on the Macross Saga for a trilogy but to see all three sagas is most interesting.

Title: "Less is more" is right...
It comes as no surprise that Warner is considering doing all three sagas of Robotech. They're hoping (probably in vain) that it'll be a runaway hit like Transformers was.

As usual, Harmony Gold is telling the fans nothing they couldn't figure out on their own using simple common sense.

Of course, anyone who can read knows that the odds of the VF-1 appearing were always zero... because Harmony Gold doesn't own the intellectual property rights to Macross. Since the current trend with Harmony Gold seems to be slightly revamping other people's designs and stories, I guess we can look forward to the Macross Saga movie's VF being either a slightly altered VF-22S Sturmvogel or Starscream from the Transformers movies.

Title: F-14
The Tomcats were decommed back in 05 so they are NOT "Long Decommishioned" And as much as I HATE the Airforce F-22 (there is NO Navy version) it will not be decommed for many decades. It's designed to be easy to upgrade, I wish he would not say things he has no basis for. Tomcats still has the biggest fan base of any military fighter just ahead of the P-51D. F-22 and F-35 are no where near as popular.

They cant use F-22s because they are Airforce Designs and therefore cannot be used on a carrier, unless they cann that idea. and Transformers already did that so it's used already.

I'm glad to see they want to do all three saga however.

Title: Another point to look at...
Seeing as the F-22 Raptor is an Air Force bird, and not carrier capable, this does leave heckling room for the die-hard purists out there, but for the common, casual observer, the heckling will come from a completely different direction.

Seeing an F-22 do the giant-robot thing will only piss off certain people for 'trying too hard to be like Transformers'.

If HG were to do it right, they'd stick to the F-14 concept, and make thier own transformation. Or, if they're really dead-set on losing the F-14, they could try the F-18...

Sorry, LVS. I dodn't mean to add to your heartburn...

Title: Eh
If they do decide to use the F-22, they can take the easy way out and use its cheaper cousin, the F-35 Lightning, which IS a Navy bird.

Title: meh
I gdoubt they will go with the F22 or the F35, I'm betting Tommy's thinking this might be a good time to break out the Gamma Fighter!!!

J/K

Really, I don't think they will base the design on any real fighter, the new ones are too purpose built, which is expressly contrary to the "Variable Fighter" ideology of the Veritechs.

My money's on an all new design.
