San Diego Comic-Con 2008 Report! from: Robotech.com
RTSC on Blu-Ray and Playstation Network! New Toynami 1/55 & 1/100 VF-1's, Battlepods ... and Betas! More major industry veterans attached to the live action movie!
Author: Steve Yun

This July, approximately 130,000 people descended into San Diego for Comic-Con International 2008, filling the convention center to capacity (tickets were sold out in May) and raising the city's average indoor air temperature about 15 degrees. Since the Comic-Con is the largest pop-culture convention in the western hemisphere, major entertainment studios came out in full force to show off their latest movies, TV shows, comics, toys and videogames. The noon Watchmen panel had people lining up at 3 in the morning, and the 10AM Heroes panel had people starting to line up the previous midnight ... insane!

It was against this backdrop that Harmony Gold came out to discuss the future of Robotech to a packed hall fill to capacity with approximately 1,200 attendees, with many people turned away at the door due to San Diego fire code.

TOYNAMI NEWS:

Toynami opened up Comic-Con with a much larger booth this year with the largest number of displays ever, showing off a much larger arsenal of licensed product:

MACROSS 12 INCH FIGURES
Toynami introduced a limited edition of 12 inch figures of Hikaru Ichijo in his flight suit from the movie Macross: Do You Remember Love. The limited edition figure features a light-up helmet and chest. The 100 remaining figures will be available this weekend exclusively on Robotech.com.

Also on display was a 12 inch figure of Max Jenius in his flight suit, which will become available later this year.

MOSPEADAS & CYCLONES!
With the Stick (Scott) and Ray (Rand) 1/15 scale MOSPEADA (Cyclone) toys out, Toynami showed off their next toy in the series, the purple MOSPEADA piloted by Yellow (Lancer). This new MOSPEADA features the two giant sabers and shields, along with missle-launcher hatches in the chest.

In addition to the 1/15 scale MOSPEADA/Cyclone toys that are currently available, Toynami showed off prototypes of their upcoming Masterpiece Collection Cyclones. The Masterpiece series will feature a 1/12 scale, with brand new sculpting and design of the much-demanded Cyclones. Finally, something to replace the Gakken-manufactured toy you accidentally broke in the 80's!

MACROSS 1/100 SCALE VF-1's & BATTLEPODS
To accompany your 1/100 scale Macross Valkyries, Toynami is showing off prototypes of 1/100 Regults (Battlepods). Finally! Battlepod toys haven't been seen since the 80's, and now you'll get to see exactly how massive they are next to the VF-1.

In addition to the Regult/Battlepod, Toynami displayed a VF-1J Armored Valkyrie, as seen in episode 8. The Armored Valkyrie has working missile hatches littered all over its heavily armored body.

ROBOTECH & MACROSS 1/55 SCALE VF-1's
Toynami had a gallery of resculpted VF-1 1/55 scale heads. Unsatisfied with the original heads from the 80's toys, Toynami has decided to redesign them to more accurately reflect how they appeared in Robotech and Macross. These heads will also tuck away in fighter mode for a more aerodynamic profile. Look for these in upcoming 1/55 scale VF-1 toys!

BETA FIGHTER. BETA. FIGHTER.
Finally, the Beta Fighter is coming. Several years in the making, the design of the Beta Fighter has been completed and is going into manufacturing this fall. For years, fans have been clamoring for a Beta Fighter to go with their Alpha Fighters, and Toynami delivers!

• Fully transformable 1/55 scale
• Links up with Alpha in both Fighter & Battloid modes
• Links with both Toynami's Alpha & Aoshima's Legioss
• Functioning cockpit with pilot figure included
• 16.75 inch wingspan
• 10 inch Fighter mode length
• 4 inch Fighter mode height
• 9.5 inch Battloid mode height
• 9 inch Battloid mode width
• 5 inch Battloid mode length
• 16 inch combined Alpha-Beta length
• 2 pounds of sturdy diecast metal & plastic
• Metal landing gears
• Display stand included
• New character art by Tommy Yune

Not content with just the blue Beta Fighter featured in Robotech, Toynami is also working on a Green Beta Fighter, Red Beta Fighter, and a Shadow Beta Fighter for the coming months! The other three new Beta Fighters will feature all-new head designs to complement the varying head designs of the Alpha Fighters.

ROBOTECH PANEL:

Creative Director Tommy Yune started off with a brief history of Robotech, including many of the past setback and successes which led us to where we are today.

ROBOTECH RPG's
With their relaunch into the Robotech universe, Palladium's Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles book become one of their best seller in years, and had the highest number of preorders ever. Palladium is currently printing new Hardcover editions and Deluxe Gold editions of the RPG, which will feature larger illustrations, improved printing processes, technical corrections and additional space vessels. Both will be available in the Robotech.com Store this coming weekend, with even more Robotech RPG books planned for release later this fall.

SHADOW CHRONICLES RELEASES
Can't get enough of Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles? Well now it's available in the Apple iTunes Store for US$7.99, and will play on your PC, Macintosh, iPod, iPhone or AppleTV.

Do you avoid Apple products and prefer to watch your shows on Sony hardware? For those of you who own Playstation 3 consoles, the Playstation Network recently launched with home movie rentals for the PS3. All the major movie distributors were on board for the Playstation Network launch, including Funimation, which made sure that Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles was one of the first titles for the home video service. PSN movies will not only play on your PS3, but can also be uploaded to PSP consoles for portable viewing.

With the battle between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray finally behind us, Funimation announced earlier this year that Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles will be coming to Blu-Ray Disc this September 2nd. Because RTSC was originally produced in high definition, it will benefit from the increased resolution, unlike many other titles which just use upscaling to convert standard definition footage to high definition. The Blu-Ray edition will also feature even more deleted scenes, commentary for deleted scenes, outtakes and animatics.

LIVE ACTION MOVIE
Tobey Maguire has been confirmed as a producer on the live action Robotech movie. Few stars have been able to carry a billion-dollar franchise like Tobey, and his excitement over Robotech is what helped make this a reality.

It was confirmed that Lawrence Kasdan was working on the film's screenplay. Who is Kasdan, you might ask? He's written a number of popular Hollywood films:
• The Bodyguard
• Silverado
• The Big Chill
• Grand Canyon

If those don't get you excited, maybe these other films written by Kasdan will:
• The Empire Strikes Back
• Return of the Jedi
• Raiders of the Lost Ark

We had two new announcements to make regarding the staff for the Robotech movie, both of which were very exciting additions:

Akiva Goldsman was announced as a producer. Who is Goldsman, you might ask? He's an Academy Award® winner who was written many critically-acclaimed screenplays:
• A Beautiful Mind
• Cinderella Man
• The Da Vinci Code

Goldsman has also produced several action-packed blockbusters:
• Mr and Mrs Smith
• I Am Legend
• Hancock

The other announcement was Charles Roven, who has also joined the project as a producer. What has Roven produced, you might ask? He's produced several hip and intelligent projects:
• Afro Samurai
• City of Angels
• Three Kings
• Twelve Monkeys

Roven has also produced some of the greatest comic book films ever:
• Batman Begins
• The Dark Knight

Oh yeah...

ROBOTECHX BOOTH:

This year also marked the debut of the RobotechX fan booth on the Mezzanine level of the San Diego Convention Center. Despite a short amount of prep time, the RobotechX crew worked with Harmony Gold and other fans from around Southern California to put together a showcase of various aspects of the Robotech franchise from licensors and fans over the past 20 years.

During the convention, the RobotechX booth hosted Harmony Gold creative director Tommy Yune, Robotech creator Carl Macek, Robotech artist Don Yee, and Robotech Latin American voice actor Jesus Barrero, who signed autographs and chatted with fans. Fans who visited the booth could also look at vintage Robotech comics, toys, and fan art from around the world. With all the Robotech celebrities and the heavy foot traffic, the RobotechX booth stayed busy with fans from morning to night.

THE TUNA HEAD SOMBRERO:

One large fan work that made a tremendous splash at the convention was the Tuna Head Sombrero. Inspired by the big tuna head from the Robotech episode "The Long Wait" , this impressive piece was constructed by Robotech.com's very own Phred. Robotech.com moderator MEMO1DOMINON decided to see what type of reaction he would receive if he walked on onto the main exhibit hall floor and the pictures speak for themselves.
