Vin Diesel, the star and a producer of Universal’s decade-long franchise, said that during the planning process of the new movie, the Fast and Furious creative team, which includes director Justin Lin and screenwriter Chris Morgan, realized that they would need a seventh movie to tell their story. The sixth and seventh are being written simultaneously, he said.

“With the success of this last one, and the inclusion of so many characters, and the broadening of scope, when we were sitting down to figure out what would fit into the real estate of number six, we didn’t have enough space,” Diesel told THR during the photoshoot for its Rule Breakers 2011 portfolio.

Fast Five moved the franchise from the genre of car-racing adventure to action-adventure heist, while garnering the best reviews in the franchise’s history and grossing an astonishing $626 million worldwide. Apart from reuniting supporting characters from previous movies, it added star power in the form of Dwayne Johnson. A coda at the end of the movie teases the return of a character played by Eva Mendes last seen in 2 Fast 2 Furious as well as the return of Michelle Rodriguez.

“We have to pay off this story, we have to service all of these character relationships, and when we started mapping all that out it just went beyond 110 pages,” Diesel explained. “The studio said, ‘You can’t fit all that story in one damn movie!’"

Diesel did not reveal details on whether the two movies would be two-parters or two standalone movies.

The actor returned to the franchise with the series’ fourth outing after appearing in an end-of-movie cameo in the third movie. The move proved so popular that it paved the way for the return of Diesel and original star Paul Walker.

The movies have proved unexpectedly resilient, something that may have to do with the themes of family and brotherhood, according to the creative team.

“It’s not about the action and the cars, which initially appealed to me when I was 25 years old,” said Walker. “Because if that’s all it was, it would have fallen off a long time ago.”

I was rather surprised when I watched Fast Five and saw that short clip at the end of the movie when The Rock and Eva Mendes characters talk about Lety - Michelle Rodriguez character is still alive and well, but stealing military / vehicles in Russia.

Plus the film possibly will show some the characters racing through Europe, Russia then through China, then finally to Japan.

I could handle maybe a 6, but a 7th film. A bit stretched don't ya think.

New Video and Photos from the Set of FAST AND FURIOUS 6; Ludacris Comments on the Upcoming Film

collider.com/fast-furious-6-set-photos-video-ludacris/198353/

Last week, we showed you some photos and videos from the set of Fast and Furious 6, and now more photos and videos have arrived online. Previously, we only saw some cars and a tank, but this time around we get a full-on crash (intentional, of course). It loses some of its majesty being shot from a spy-cam, but I’m sure director Justin Lin will cut it together to make it an exhilarating moment for fans of the franchise.

Hit the jump to check out images and video, although this could probably be considered a minor spoiler, so consider yourself warned. We’ve also included comments about the film from Ludacris, who is returning to play Tej Parker. The film also stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Michelle Rodriguez, Joe Taslim, and Luke Evans. Fast and Furious 6 opens May 24, 2013.

Details on the plot have been scarce, but Ludacris confirms to CNN that the story revolves around dueling heist crews:

“It kind of takes up from where we left off [in 'Fast and Furious 5'], and there is a whole new batch of surprises,” he said. “The crew that is in ‘Fast 5,’ we are going up against a rival crew, so it’s almost like Justice League up against the Legion of Doom.”

This movie series has been surprisingly resilient. I really enjoyed the 3rd one in Tokyo, I thought 4 was okay, but 5 was really good. I look forward to seeing this one as well. The previews have looked good, nice that they are getting away from the emphais on racing and moving more towards action/adventure. I think that has broadened the appeal considerably.

Lucas Black Returns for FAST & FURIOUS 7, 8 and 9

collider.com/fast-and-furious-7-lucas-black/

Fast & Furious franchise fans will be happy to hear that Lucas Black will return to the fold in James Wan’s Fast & Furious 7. Appearing only in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Black will make up for his absence by not only starring in the upcoming feature, but the next two after that. Black’s drift-racing character, Sean Boswell, will become a series regular for at least the next film trilogy. For those of you who have been paying attention throughout the entire franchise, you’ll understand why it makes sense to add Black/Boswell back in now. If you need a refresher, hit the jump.

The film also stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, Jason Statham and Djimon Honsou. Check out Fast & Furious 7 when it opens July 11, 2014.

Deadline reports that Black will return in Fast & Furious 7 and at least the two films that follow it. As I mentioned above, Black previously starred in the franchise’s third installment, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. (Spoilers follow.) In the 2006 picture, Sean Boswell (Black) was introduced as an Alabama teenager living in Tokyo and learning how to drift in order to compete in street races. The picture also introduces Sung Kang as Han, who met a disastrous end with an explosive conclusion to the film. Fans were somewhat confused, and understandably so, when Kang returned as Han in the fourth, fifth and sixth installments.

The trick is in realizing that the order of the films in which they were released is not the chronology of events within the films themselves. The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift is actually the most recent film as far as in-movie events are concerned, especially since the ending of that film ties into the ending of Fast & Furious 6. In other words, the fourth, fifth and sixth installments occur after the first two films, but act as prequels to Tokyo Drift. Fast & Furious 7 should tie all of the previous films together, especially with the addition of Black, and will get us back on the chronological track.

So, to get the full picture, watch the films in this order:

The Fast and the Furious (2001)
Turbo Charged Prelude (2003 Video)*
2 Fast 2 Furious (2003)
Los Bandoleros (2009 Short Film)*
Fast & Furious (2009)
Fast Five (2011)
Fast & Furious 6 (2013)
The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift (2006)
Fast & Furious 7 (2014)
