THUNDERCATS Ho!, THUNDERCATS No! was created by MEMO1DOMINION

I’ve spoken to a few reliable sources and they tell me the movie is no longer happening at Warner Bros.

With the success of 80’s properties like Transformers and G.I. Joe at the box office, it’s little wonder that movie studios are looking at what else they can grab from that decade so they can mine it for box office gold. As most of you know, Hollywood is trying to make Robotech, He-Man and Voltron movies, and while those could be very cool, the one 80’s property I’ve always wanted to see is Thundercats.

I don’t know why this cartoon means so much to me (maybe it’s the cool logo), but I’ve always thought the story of humanoid cats fleeing their exploding world was ripe with potential. Also, Mumm-Ra was awesome. But even though I’d love to see it, I’ve spoken to a few reliable sources and they tell me the movie is no longer happening at Warner Bros. I wish I wasn’t reporting that news.

Before getting to the good news, if you didn’t know, WB was developing a Thundercats movie back in late 2007. Variety reported video game vet Jerry O’Flaherty was set to direct a CGI-animated feature film based on the property. He even said:

“It feels like a natural thing for me to step into,” he said. “Games have come so far now. The last four years of my life have been about bringing the energy of filmmaking into the video game experience.”

The movie was going to be an origin story similar to the original pilot, “Exodus” (which you can watch here). It would have focused on Lion-O becoming the leader of the Thundercats and having to do battle with Mumm-Ra.

But, as I said, it seems like Lion-O’s Sword of Omens won’t be calling on any of the other Thundercats anytime soon.

Now on to the good news about the toys and video games:

While the movie might be shelved, the kids’ WB has released a few 80’s inspired flash based video games based on the Thundercats. In the first game, The Rescue, you get to pick which character you play (Lion-O, Panthro, Cheetara or Tygra) and each one has their own special ability. The game plays like a classic Nintendo NES game so it’s not too complicated.

In the second game, The Orb of Madness, it looks like it was developed by a completely different designer as it looks and plays nothing like The Rescue. You start the game as Panthro, and as you get further along, you switch into other characters.

While neither game will win any best of the year awards, if you’re a Thundercats fan, both are worth checking out.

Finally, if you’ve got some spare cash this holiday season, Hard Hero has created two cold-cast porcelain Thundercats statues of Lion-O and Cheetara. The Lion-O figure is 14″ tall and the Cheetara is 11″. Both are $199.99

Really? I wasn't. It probably would have been a bust. I just can't see those characters Live-Action. Some things just aren't meant to be.

I don't think so, maybe the timing. They're completely different. Haven't seen Avatar and probably won't until its available to rent.

Will Smith Plans Thundercats Movie?

Wednesday April 20, 2011

WILL Smith wants to make a Thundercats movie!

The Hollywood superstar is said to be looking to develop and star in a live action movie based on the cult cartoon capers of a group of cat people whose space ship crashes on a mysterious planet.

“Will is a big Thundercats fan and even his kids are into it now,” says a source close to the Smiths.

“Will is looking to develop a script and possibly work with (wife) Jada on the project.”

Oh, wonderful. Now we just need to await the next article that says Will Smith is pushing to get his son in the role of Lion-O.
